Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt - VACANCY No. 19-86-7

The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science.

The PTB in Berlin-Adlershof uses synchrotron radiation from the electronen storage rings Metrology Light Source (MLS) and BESSY II for metrology at own beamlines. The progressing miniturization, especially in semiconductor fabrication, presents new challenges for metrology. For the further development of appropriate measuring techniques, Department 7.2 "X-ray measurement technology with synchrotron radiation" of Division 7 is looking for a doctoral candidate, specializing in physics, applied mathematics or a relevant engineering science to join us as soon as possible. The position is available on the basis of a 3-year fixed-term contract. The renumeration will be in accordance with renumeration group 13 TVöD Bund (85 %). You will be employed at our Berlin-Adlershof site.

Doctoral candidate, specializing in physics, applied mathematics or a relevant engineering science

Focus: Characterization of nanomaterials with the help of X-ray spectrometry under grazing incidence or grazing detection

Grazing incidence or grazing exit X-ray fluorescence (GIXRF / GEXRF) is used at PTB to characterize different nanostructures, from simple layers to three-dimensional structures. PTB's own measurement setups enable dimensional characterization and traceable quantification of the different elements present in a sample. These measuring principles are to be further developed especially for state-of-the-art applications in the semiconductor industry.

Working field:

  • Independent conception, execution and data evaluation of X-ray spectrometric experiments
  • Modeling and simulation of electromagnetic fields using numerical methods
  • Determination of measurement uncertainties by means of stochastic calculations (for example Monte Carlo method)
  • Application and further development of methods of machine learning and uncertainty determination

  • German Master's or "Diplom" with a degree in physics or an adjoining subject with a strong interest in physical experiments and modeling
  • Knowledge and practical experience in at least one of the following desirable fields: X-ray experimental research and related methods (e.g. X-ray fluorescence analysis, X-ray reflectometry or scattering), finite element methods
  • Programming skills (such as Python) and interest in developing theoretical models through proprietary software solutions
  • independent, structured way of working
  • strong team and communication skills
  • good command of spoken and written German and English
  • Willingness to travel within Germany and abroad

PTB promotes the professional equality of women and men and is thus especially interested in applications from women.
Within the scope of the official feasibilities, PTB offers flexible part-time work schemes in order to support in particular the compatibility of family and profession.
Disabled persons will be given priority, if they have the same occupational aptitude.
