Mas­ter/Dip­loma Thesis: Spin­tron­ics - Devel­op­ment of CMOS-com­pat­ible Mater­i­als, Met­ro­logy and Devices

Work­ing field:

Based on recent dis­co­ve­ries in spin­tro­nics, spin-based imple­men­ta­ti­ons like e.g. Magne­tic Ran­dom Access Memory (MRAM) or Race­track Memory (RTM) are approa­ches to over­come fun­da­men­tal sca­ling limits in semi­con­duc­tor indus­try. Spin con­ver­sion is a key ele­ment in spin-based com­pu­ting sys­tems, like e.g. Spin Trans­fer Tor­que or Spin Orbit Tor­que. We plan to explore fun­da­men­tal buil­ding blocks for such app­li­ca­ti­ons.

Wit­hin the scope of a Mas­ter/Diploma The­sis the fol­lo­wing tasks should be per­for­med:
  • Deve­lop­ment and Pro­ces­sing of thin film mate­ri­als for Spin­tro­nics Devices (e.g. MRAM, Race­track)
  • Expe­ri­men­tal work in clean­room and lab with state-of-the-art indus­try tools
  • Sys­te­ma­tic plan­ning and rea­li­za­tion of own expe­ri­men­tal series
  • Sum­mary of the results and dis­cus­sion wit­hin an inter­na­tio­nal team

Require­ments:

  • Stu­dies of elec­tri­cal engi­nee­ring, pro­cess engi­nee­ring, microelec­tro­nics, phy­sics, che­mi­stry, mate­rial sci­ence or simi­lar stu­dies in the field of engi­nee­ring or sci­ence
  • Basic know­ledge in solid state phy­sics/che­mi­stry, elec­tri­cal engi­nee­ring, semi­con­duc­tor phy­sics, sur­face sci­en­ces, magne­tism phe­no­mena or rela­ted
  • High moti­va­tion to work inde­pendently on the expe­ri­men­tal rea­li­za­tion of your expe­ri­ments in clean­room and lab
  • Result-ori­en­ted spi­rit of work with the atti­tude of crea­tive pro­blem sol­ving
  • Very good set of com­mu­ni­ca­tion skills

The posi­tion is limi­ted. The dura­tion is fle­xi­ble accord­ing to agree­ment and pos­si­ble study gui­de­li­nes.

The sci­en­ti­fic work is plan­ned to be car­ried out in the busi­ness area Cen­ter Nanoelec­tro­nic Tech­no­lo­gies CNT at Fraun­ho­fer IPMS in Dres­den. The exami­na­tion takes place via the con­nec­tion to a Ger­man tech­ni­cal uni­ver­sity and is based on the respec­tive state uni­ver­sity law. The working time con­sists of maxi­mum 39 hours per week.

In case of iden­ti­cal qua­li­fi­ca­ti­ons pre­fe­rence will be given to severely dis­ab­led can­di­da­tes.
We would like to point out that the cho­sen job title also inclu­des the third gen­der. The Fraun­ho­fer-Gesell­schaft empha­si­ses gen­der-inde­pen­dent pro­fes­sio­nal equa­lity.

We at the Fraun­ho­fer IPMS deve­lop elec­tro­nic, mecha­ni­cal and opti­cal com­pon­ents and work on their inte­gra­tion into minia­tu­ri­zed modu­les and sys­tems. We aim for custo­mers who want to increase the func­tio­n­a­lity of their pro­ducts by use of micro­sys­tems (MEMS, MOEMS, CMOS) with inno­va­tive fea­tures and smal­ler dimen­si­ons.
