Master or Diploma Thesis "Electric and Fluidic Characterization Environment for Microfluidic MEMS-Devices" (IPMS-2018-130)
Flow-regulation and -generation on a micrometer length scale are of high scientific and industrial interest in the ongoing trend of system miniaturization. The Fraunhofer IPMS thereby uses a patented class of lateral electrostatic bending actuators to develop a set of silicon based Micropumps and Microvalves devices. The in-house fabricated microfluidic MEMS-devices were designed to have the electrical contacts on the backside and the fluidic inlet and outlet on the frontside of the chip. In order to efficiently characterize the silicon chips, a suitable measurement setup needs to be developed which allows the action on of the fluidic domain via electrical excitation of the device.
The starting point is the research of state of the art combined electric and fluidic chip based measurement systems. For a specific device layout you will decide of a proper electrical contact method in combination with a leak-proof interface with fluidic connectors to the microfluidic measurement bench.
Determination and evaluation of existing combined electric and fluidic chip based measurement systems
Choice and design of a custom electrical connection method
Choice and design of a custom cover plate with microfluidic connections
Investigate and test fluidic tightness of device chip and chip holder cover via custom made interface-pads
Proof of functionality of designed and fabricated measurement setup
What you bring:
Basic knowledge in the field of microsystems and electrical engineering would be an advantage
Basic knowledge with 3D Design Software, i.e. Autodesk Inventor, etc.
Basic knowledge of working in a laboratory and knowledge of metrology techniques
