As a mem­ber of the Helm­holtz Asso­ci­ation of Ger­man Rese­arch Cen­ters, the HZDR employs about 1,400 people. The Cen­ter's focus is on inter­dis­cip­lin­ary rese­arch in the areas energy, health, and mat­ter.

The Cen­ter for Advan­ced Sys­tems Under­stan­ding (CASUS) is a Ger­man-Polish rese­arch cen­ter for data-inten­sive digi­tal sys­tems rese­arch. CASUS was foun­ded in 2019 in Gör­litz and con­ducts digi­tal inter­di­sci­pli­nary sys­tems rese­arch in various fields such as earth sys­tems rese­arch, sys­tems bio­logy and mate­ri­als rese­arch.

As part of the Insti­tute, the Depart­ment of Earth Sys­tem Sci­ence invi­tes app­li­ca­ti­ons as Post­Doc (f/m/d) Data-inten­sive rese­arch on riverine bio­di­ver­sity and hydro­logy.

The posi­tion will be avail­able from 1 August 2022. The employ­ment con­tract is limi­ted to three years.

Working field:

The suc­cess­ful can­di­date (f/m/d) will be part of a team stu­dy­ing how river net­work geo­me­try, hydro­logy and water qua­lity inter­act to shape freshwa­ter fish bio­di­ver­sity pat­terns in river sys­tems world­wide.

  • Expand and ana­lyze an exten­sive data­base of spa­ti­ally refe­ren­ced fish spe­cies occur­rence records and hydro­lo­gi­cal varia­bles
  • Deve­lop sta­tis­ti­cal methods to fit dyna­mic bio­di­ver­sity simu­la­tion models (e.g., den­dri­tic neu­tral models) to spe­cies occur­rence data
  • Employ machine lear­ning sur­ro­gate models to replace com­pu­ta­tio­nally inten­sive bio­di­ver­sity simu­la­ti­ons in large-scale bio­di­ver­sity pro­jec­tions
  • Publish results in aca­de­mic, peer-reviewed jour­nals
  • Pre­sent results at sci­en­ti­fic mee­tings


  • PhD degree in Sta­tis­tics, Data sci­ence, Machine lear­ning, Quan­ti­ta­tive eco­logy, or a rela­ted field
  • Expe­ri­ence in model-based sta­tis­ti­cal ana­ly­sis and modern machine lear­ning methods (e.g., deep neural net­works)
  • Advan­ced pro­gramming skills in data sci­ence lan­guages such as R, Python, and Julia
  • Excel­lent com­mu­ni­ca­tion skills in Eng­lish in a pro­fes­sio­nal con­text (pre­sen­ta­tion of rese­arch results at sci­en­ti­fic mee­tings, col­lo­quial dis­cus­sions, manu­script wri­ting)
  • Evi­dence of the abi­lity to publish results in top peer-reviewed jour­nals
